Located right on lake Michigan in early April you never know what type of weather you will get and it usually is windy and on the cool or cold side. This half is a warm up for all of us 4 season athletes here in the midwest. Put on the the local running club The Badgerland Striders, there is always a great post party after the hammerin' 13.1. The course is on a bicycle path through 2 of the Milwaukee County Parks. These Parks provide ample recreation for the local communities to use at anytime during the year. If you are ever in the area, make sure you check out one of the parks if you want to bike, run, walk explore. You will truly enjoy yourself. Anyway the course is an out and back, this year we had the wind on the way back and it was very testing, but as always a Blast! definitely a cardio blast! Warren will also bike across the country, possibly marking the first time an individual has both run and biked cross-country in the same event. This will be Tom’s second cross-USA charity run. In 1983, Tom ran across the United States for the Sunshine Foundation in 64 days, averaging 46 miles per day.

The run will start at the San Diego, California Marine Corps Recruit Depot on March 1st, 2008 and finish at the Marine Corps Memorial in Washington, DC on July 4th, 2008. It will consist of 112 days of at least 30-mile runs.

Tom has completed 185 marathons and ultramarathons, some of which were 100 miles in length. In addition, he has completed nine 250-mile charity runs and one 500-mile charity run around the island of Okinawa for the Shriners and crippled children. He did a Labor Day 300-mile charity run in 3 days and 7 hours for Jerry Lewis and muscular dystrophy, raising over $25,000 in that one event.

Tom is well over the half-million dollar charity mark and expects to reach his lifetime goal of raising $1 million plus for charity with his 2008 cross-country run.

Tom spent 33 years in the Marine Corps, and is a Korea and Vietnam veteran. After 9/11, at the age of 70, he served in Afghanistan and Iraq for a government intelligence agency. Tom now teaches aboard Navy ships for Central Texas College and resides in Honolulu, Hawaii. He is the author of the book, Why Not a Million?, which includes details on the conception of the Ironman Triathlon, the Okinawa and Jerry Lewis runs, and his 64-day USA run.

Warren has completed 40 marathons and is a second-generation Ironman, having completed Ironman triathlons in Wisconsin, Florida, St. Croix, and New Zealand. He is a writer for Triathlete Magazine.

In the 2008 Freedom Run, Tom and Warren will each run the 30-mile distance each day. Then Warren will be driven back to the day’s start and will bike the same distance.

Throughout the cross-USA run, runners, joggers, walkers, and wheelchair racers are encouraged to join in the run for whatever mileage they desire to do. Warren and Tom will do some public speaking on route to promote physical fitness among children, adults and senior citizens. They will also promote the March 2008 National Challenge of the President’s Council on Physical Fitness.

Blue Seventy features at the 2007 Ford Ironman World Championship, October 13th Kailua-Kona, Hawaii

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Blueseventy firmly grounded themselves as a world leader in the manufacture of triathlon and open water swimming products at this year’s Ford Ironman World Championship in 2007 with their pointzero3 swim skin.

Blueseventy (70% of the earth is made up of water) went from watching 16 professional athletes wearing the revolutionary pointzero3 swim skin at the 2006 Ford Ironman World Championship, to having 601 participants wearing the pointzero3 in 2007, including age group athletes and professionals alike. One third of this year’s field swam in a blueseventy pointzero3.

Designed to be worn during non-wetsuit swims, the pointzero3 swim skin features an incredibly low surface friction co-efficient featuring the exceptional fit and performance characteristics blueseventy have become renowned for.

Both 2007 Ford Ironman World Champions, Chris McCormack of Australia and Chrissy Wellington of Great Britain also chose to wear blueseventy as part their race day tactics. Linda Gallo (first woman to exit the water and 2nd swimmer over-all) wore a pointzero3+; the latest blueseventy swim skin addition launched a day before race day.

Blueseventy is proud to have introduced an innovative product to the world of triathlon and open water swimming that has had such a profound affect on an athlete’s swim. The 2007 World Champion, Chris McCormack was quoted as saying pre-race to the public,
“If you do not swim in a swim skin, you will be at a definite disadvantage to those who are”.

Not since the invention of aero bars in the late 1980’s has a performance product been in such high demand. During pre-race week, men were purchasing the last of the women’s sizes of the pointzero3 so as not to miss out on available swim skins.

The best performances in sport have been predicted by innovation and attention to detail. The pointzero3 swim skin is the continued evolution of such performance. blueseventy is completely committed to exploring their limits with producing the best products an athlete can perform in.

Blueseventy focuses solely on manufacturing wetsuits, swim skins, accessories and goggles all designed for the open water swimmer.

Due to concentrating on producing such specialist products, the blueseventy brand is the highest selling wetsuit brand in the USA.

For any future media information please contact alex@blueseventy.com
Denver Marathon 10/14/07 by Paul T

The Denver Marathon took place on Sunday, October 14th. The City of Denver boasts that it has 300 days of sunshine a year but unfortunately the odds weren’t in our favor on race day as it rained all day long with temperatures in the low forties. The race begins in a park in front of the State Capitol and winds through the city streets and parks. We ran right by Coors Field which would play host to a Rockies playoff victory that night. The course is fairly flat with a few rolling hills, and no, I did not feel any effects at all of “running at altitude”. The race is well supported with plenty of aid stations and police officers at all intersections. The race director also happens to be the race director of another marathon you may have heard of that takes place in Boston every April. We stayed at the host hotel – The Adams Mark – which was a great call. The hotel was located only a 5 minute walk from the start/finish line and also hosted the pre-race expo and pasta feed. I highly recommend staying there if you decide to do this race. For pizza, try the Wazee Supper Club located at the corner of 15th Street and Wazee Street. Great pizza made from scratch and a nice selection of malted beverages.

Freedom Run Across America 2008

CONTACT INFORMATION:

Freedom Run Across America
Director of Communications
U.S. Multi-Sport Athletic Events, LTD
5317 S. The run takes place on the hiking/X-C ski trails of the park which to those familiar with the park, are very challenging. When I signed up for this race I pictured a nice cool run in pristine Fall weather. Unfortunately, the 10:30 AM start was met with unseasonable humidity and 80 degree temperatures. That combined with the hills made for a very tough race day. The race starts at the Homestead Hollow parking lot and within a few hundred yards you have to climb a steep hill leading up to the 'Butterfly Garden' where the trail levels out for a quarter mile or so before you hit the 'Tower Hill' climb. You hit the top of the ridge at 'Stairway to Heaven' and then make a major descent down 'Big Slide'. From there the next 3K or so is fairly mellow terrain wise however the heat and humidity hardly allowed anyone to enjoy that respite from the hills. Pretty soon it was climbing time again up 'South Hill' and then right in to 'Gut Buster' where I almost barfed out a lung. After cresting again at 'Stairway to Heaven' it was down hill for awhile on' Big Valley' then more up and down along 'Pete's Pass' and 'Subdivision Hill' and 'Rock Ridge' and 'Roller Coaster'. Fortunately we did not have to climb 'The Wall' but were allowed to bypass that along the appropriately named ' Wimp's Way'. I don't think any one of the 180 finishers would complain about that bypass. I was extremely happy to see the finish line and was surprised to find that I had finished 10th overall. This was a tough course given the weather conditions. The downhills tear up your quads and the uphills burn your lungs and make you question why you do these things to yourself. I'd like to try this run again in cooler conditions, and I can't wait for X-C skiing to start!!
